Housing support

Supporting People

The Supporting People programme provides schemes which offer Housing Related Support to people who are homeless or who are at risk of losing their home because they are struggling to manage their responsibilities as a householder.

Housing Related Support, or Tenancy Support as it is also known, is designed to help people to sort things out for themselves, so that they can live independently. It can help people with things like managing their finances so that they don’t get into rent or mortgage arrears; dealing with a landlord to get repairs done; being a good neighbour; accessing services etc.

To qualify for a service, people must be vulnerable in some way.  This could be because they, amongst other things, are young and inexperienced; have a learning disability; are an older person or are experiencing domestic abuse. Supporting People schemes don’t provide personal care or health care.

Some schemes support people in their own homes and others provide somewhere to live as well as teaching people the skills to manage a tenancy before moving on to their own place.
